Returning Home February 2010 Literary
Notes and Comments

This is the story of a prisoner of war returning home from Vietnam. I originally conceived of this story about ten years ago. As a teenager I was very interested in war, particularly the Vietnam War, and I had always wanted to write about war. Those fantasies died off, and I lost all interest in war, so, naturally, I never wrote the story that I originally intended to write.

Just recently, though, I had an opportunity that begged me to write this story. So I finally did. Admittedly it is quite a bit different than the story that I had conceived ten years ago, but the general idea is still there.

This will probably be the last story I will ever write concerning a historic war. If I write about war in the future it will be strictly in a science fiction or fantasy setting. In fact, it is quite possible that future drafts of this story will be moved into science fiction.

This is the coming of age story of a boy named Riley. The story deals with themes of aspirations, relationships, and sex. Riley is a typical college student with dreams of making a name for himself, at the same time he has to deal with certain uncertainties concerning his girlfriend Jane.

Estranged Images January 2009 Literary, Weird Fiction
Notes and Comments

The strange tale of an estranged couple, emotionally separated when the woman's father moves in with the couple. The story deals with passion, anger, love, and a very strange mix of characters. Definitely one of my stranger pieces, which is why I chose the title for it.

Don't Get Caught in the Girls Locker Room 2 2004 Dark Comedy
Notes and Comments

This is an unauthorized sequel to Todd Strasser's Don't Get Caught in the Girls Locker Room. It is the continued story of Kyle and Dusty in their high school years. Unlike the original story this contains adult themes.

I happened to pick up a copy of the original novel in a thrift store, and though I don't normally read juvenile literature, I had to know what this story could possibly be about. So I read it. I was disappointed, however, by the lack of adult themes or anything else that might have been considered risque. Not that I expected any of that from a Scholastic novel.

In response, however, I wanted to create a story featuring the same characters, but with adult themes. This story is pretty mild, but it is closer to what I thought a novel entitled Don't Get Caught in the Girls Locker Room should be about.

Mere Memory 2003 Literary, Weird Fiction
Notes and Comments

Mere Memory is the tragic story of the relationship between a man and a woman. It is about a woman in love with a man that cannot return the affection to her. It is a sad story, featuring characters full of regret and sorrows.

I originally wrote this as a thesaurus game. I wanted to create a story that seemed as abstract as possibly, even with a fairly straightforward plot. Readers will notice the odd choice of words, sometimes forming awkward phrases, at other time forming beautiful sentences. Much of the story was written by right clicking on words, and then choosing a different word from the pop-up menu to replace them.

Writers often find themselves concerned about using the same word too often, and this story could be proof that maybe sometimes the same word is the right word.
